How to Wear a Pocket Watch?

It is an infrequent joy to discover somebody using a pocket watch considering how fashions and trends have changed over the years. When meeting a person wearing a pocket watch, it is interesting to observe what you can learn about the individual who is wearing the watch.  Most people you will encounter sporting a pocket watch will be well versed in the etiquette for wearing the watch, and they will wear it proudly.  While there are acceptable variations,  there are certain specific guidelines that are followed to properly wear a pocket watch.

Pocket watches are designed to be worn with a length of chain that attaches on one end to the watch and on the other end to the clothing of the person wearing it.  You may see chains hanging in various lengths, however, it is not a good idea to have the chain dropping too down to long as it can easily get caught on something while walking past.  This can result in damage to the watch and possibly to the person wearing it.  For this reason, a pocket watch is not the best choice while participating in certain activities such as sports.

Pocket watches are usually kept inside the owner's pants pocket, however, it can also be concealed inside a vest pocket or the chest pocket on a jacket.  You will usually find that most people wear their watch on the side for the hand they use the most.  For example, a righ-handed person may be more comfortable wearing his or her pocket watch on the right side.  This is not always the case though and there is no right or wrong side. Which side you choose for your watch is based on personal preference.

Often, pocket watches will be engraved with a message of some type.  It can be as simple as your initials and the date it was acquired or a personal message from the person who gave it as a gift.  Children and grandchildren who are the recipients of an heirloom pocket watch passed down from a parent, grandparent, or other family or friend covet these timepieces.  The next time you meet someone with a pocket watch, note how they are wearing it and ask them if they have a story to tell about how they got the watch, chance are, it will be interesting.
